Active Listening Techniques Every one of us can think back to times when we had to completely halt what we were doing in order to pay attention to what another person was saying. Simply put, we are not taking in anything that would be advantageous to us for a variety of reasons. How often have you been introduced to someone by name, only to realize that you don't remember what their name is after thirty seconds has passed? The skill of actively listening involves concentrating on extracting meaning from what is being heard. It is only through careful attention to what another person is saying that we may understand what they are trying to convey to us. Even when we pay attention to what is being said to us, there is no guarantee that we will comprehend everything that is being communicated; however, we will at least be aware of the fact that we do not comprehend everything and will be able to ask the appropriate questions in order to obtain illumination. Because it is the backbone of effective communication, active listening needs to become a habitual part of everyone's daily routine. Imagine a troop commander who does not genuinely listen to his orders and attacks the incorrect target. The consequences of not actively listening can be quite concerning, to say the least.
