This rigorous textbook covers the construction, analysis and design of shallow and deep foundations, as well as retaining structures and slopes. Calculations of bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations are updated to reflect more realistic methods proposed since the 1st edition. Recent research on piles and new design methods are incorporated, with new methods for both axially loaded piles and laterally loaded piles, so that both traditional knowledge and recent progress in the topic are available.
