Beethoven is the central figure of Western classical music. This book is an attempt to show how we feel about him, how we understand him, and above all how we can enjoy his music. John Deathridge has brought together all the relevant information for everyone to find their own way towards this most rewarding of composers. In vivid and direct style, he introduces the reader to each of Beethoven's works, together with selected recordings, from the tiniest piano piece to the largest vocal and instrumental composition. He offers a concise account of the composer's life, and of subsequent 'lives' - the semi-fictional biographies that have emerged in popular biographies, newspapers, novels, films, and even medical and scientific journals, since his death in 1827. Beethoven was the first composer to make music come of age, allowing it to express theological and philosophical truths, while also retaining the elegance and sheer enjoyment of sound he inherited from the 18th century. It is a fascinating and complex story, told here simply but in depth.
