Interactive Play and Creative Activities for Children with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome

This book will provide professionals working with children who have autism and Asperger's syndrome with a range of play and creative activities that can be incorporated into the curriculum to support their learning and development. For all children, opportunities to be creative and develop imagination are fundamental to how they develop more flexible ways of thinking, communicating and interacting. Play and creativity have a crucial role in children's cognitive and affective development and are a key feature of how individuals learn to take part in motivating and enjoyable activities throughout their lives. This book is a collection of creative activities in story making, art, music, dance/movement that can be used with primary age children and children of all ages in special schools who have autism and Asperger's syndrome. All these activities have been used with children in schools and can be adapted to support children with different abilities. They have also been devised to support children's participation in social learning activities with their peers with the overriding acknowledgement that play and creativity provide appropriate and effective inclusive experiences for all children within the learning environment
