Fino alla fine del 1680, Henry Purcell compose quasi esclusivamente per la corte reale. Ma quando, nel 1690, la monarchia ridusse le spese per la musica, entrò nella United Company, una compagnia teatrale londinese dedicandosi alla composizione per il teatro. Nacquero pere come Re Artù (1691), La regina delle fate (1692) e La regina indiana (1695), ma anche spettacoli come La moglie virtuosa (1695). Tyrannic Love è un’antologia di questi lavori il cui programma è completato da opere di compositori colleghi di Purcell o da lui influenzati come John Blow, John Eccles, Jeremiah Clarke e Daniel Purcell. Questo album segna l’inizio della collaborazione tra Alpha e l’ensemble Les Surprises, fondato nel 2010, che prende il nome da Les Surprises del’Amour di Rameau, compositore emblematico del gruppo. Sotto la direzione artistica di Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas, che è anche organista e clavicembalista, l’ensemble presenta interpretazioni innovative ed esplora le ricche sonorità orchestrali rese possibili dall’uso di strumenti barocchi.
