Understand Body Language You may have heard of the term "body language," but are you familiar with its meaning? When I was watching a basketball game, I remember the sportscaster saying something like, "Air Jordan used a little Body Language to coax that ball into the hoop, as he released the free throw." I found this to be an interesting observation. He gave the impression that the player was using some kind of mind-control technique by shifting his hips to the side in order to get the ball into the basket. Body language is just one example of the myriad of examples of body language that we do and apply to our lives on a regular basis, either intentionally or unconsciously. What exactly does "Body Language" mean? Body language refers to the unsaid or non-verbal mode of communication that we use in all aspects of our interactions with other people, including when we are speaking with them. It is analogous to a mirror in that it reflects back to us what the other person thinks and feels in reaction to the things that we say or do. In addition to gestures and tics, other types of physical indications make up body language. Would you be surprised to learn that in actual situations, 60-80 percent of the messages that we communicate to other individuals are transmitted through body language, whereas the actual spoken interaction only accounts for 7-10 percent of the total? Our capacity to use body language in a constructive manner and to read the minds of other people by observing their body language is one of the characteristics that distinguishes adults from children (or women from girls), and it can be an effective instrument in the process of our overall character development.
